The idea came to me at eleven at night during a gallery export. I was running the plugin on twelve burst sequences from a Saturday wedding — ring exchange, first dance dip, sparkler exit — watching polished, edited MP4s materialize one after another. These were going to live in a Pic-Time gallery and get opened maybe thirty times over the next ten years.

What if I just posted one to Instagram?

I uploaded the sparkler exit that night. No music, no text overlay. It got more reach than my previous six static posts combined. That was last October. These days, about half my Instagram Reels start life as burst sequences from whatever wedding I’m currently editing.

Why the Algorithm Likes These

Most photographers who post Reels are using video — clips from a second camera, phone footage from the day, drone snippets. Burst photos converted to animation are different in a specific way: they loop, they’re short, and they look like photographs in motion rather than video.

That loop behavior matters. A 2-second burst of confetti falling replays itself ten times before someone swipes away. A 60-second behind-the-scenes clip does not. Tight loops earn replay rate, and replay rate is one of the signals that pushes content further. I’m not pretending to fully understand the algorithm — nobody outside Meta does — but empirically, my burst Reels consistently outperform my video clips and by a wider margin than I expected.

The other thing that genuinely surprised me: these clips already carry your full Lightroom edit. Color grade, white balance, tone curve — all of it is baked in. There’s no separate video color correction step, no trying to match the look of your stills to your video footage. The MP4 that comes out of Lightroom looks exactly like your photos, because it was made from your photos.

The Vertical Crop Problem

Instagram Reels want 9:16. Burst photos are 3:2 landscape. This is the one real point of friction in this workflow, and it’s worth being honest about.

Plan vertical at the shoot. If you’re thinking Reels while shooting, position your burst sequences so the meaningful action sits in the center third of the frame. When you crop to 9:16 in Lightroom later, nothing critical gets cut. This works well for tighter moments — ring exchanges, first looks, close-in portraits. The edges of a burst frame are usually negative space anyway.

Crop in Lightroom before processing. Select your burst frames, apply a 9:16 crop ratio in the Develop module, sync the crop across all frames, then process them. The plugin works with whatever Lightroom is showing, so cropped frames produce cropped output. Five seconds of work.

Leave it landscape. Not every Reel needs to fill the phone screen. 16:9 video plays fine on Instagram — it just has black bars top and bottom. For wide moments like sparkler arches or open-field first dances, I often leave them in landscape deliberately. The bars frame the action. It looks considered, because it is.

I use all three depending on the shot. A first-look burst is usually center-heavy enough to crop vertical without losing anything. The wide sparkler arch stays landscape. A ring exchange on a small hand filling the center of frame — I plan the crop at the shoot because I know it’s going to Reels.

The Lightroom-to-Reel Sequence

Step 1: Select your burst frames. In Lightroom Library, pick the sequence — typically 15–30 consecutive frames. Apply your develop edits as usual. If you’re going vertical, apply the 9:16 crop in Develop and sync across frames before moving on.

Step 2: Run Burst2GIF. Library > Plug-in Extras > Burst2GIF. (Full disclosure: I built this plugin — details at burst2gif.) Choose MP4 format; Instagram doesn’t accept GIF files for Reels. Set resolution to 1080px for Reels — there’s no benefit going higher. For frame rate, 10–12 fps hits the sweet spot for most wedding moments. Higher starts to look like video; lower reads as choppy.

Step 3: Export from Lightroom. The plugin auto-imports the finished MP4 back into your catalog with the correct capture timestamp. Export it like any video: File > Export, check “Include Video Files.”

Step 4: Post. Upload the MP4 to Instagram as a Reel. Add music or text in the app if you want — I usually just add a track and a location tag and let the clip carry it. The motion does the work.

Start to finish, after the shoot: 5–6 minutes per clip. The editing is already done. The only new step is pressing export twice.

What Actually Works as a Reel

Some burst moments translate better than others. From a year of testing my own content:

Confetti and sparkler exits. Visual complexity, randomness, the kind of thing that’s genuinely hard to capture in a single frame. These loop almost hypnotically and tend to get saved.

First looks. Emotion unfolding frame by frame — the groom turning, the expression shifting — is exactly the kind of content people stop and watch twice. My highest-performing Reel is a 3-second first look, 11 fps, no music.

Kids at receptions. Flower girl spinning, toddler finding the dance floor, a small person stealing wedding cake. These humanize your feed in a way pure couple portraits can’t.

Detail bursts. Dress fabric caught mid-float, bouquet handoff, veil toss. Tight and fast, these read as cinematic at 12 fps even though they started life as 20 consecutive RAW files.

What doesn’t translate: walking sequences where the subjects are mostly static between frames (looks like a confused slow-motion video), and group shots where every face is in a slightly different position — the flicker is distracting. A successful burst Reel needs movement that has direction and continuity.

The Honest Part

Burst2GIF was designed as a gallery tool — its natural home is delivering animated moments to clients in Pic-Time and Pixieset. The Reels workflow is a side effect I didn’t plan for. The same output file that goes in the gallery goes to Instagram. Nothing extra.

That’s what makes this worthwhile. If you’re already shooting bursts and already running them through the plugin for gallery delivery, the Reel is zero additional work at the shoot and 30 extra seconds of exporting. You’re just adding one more destination for something that already exists.
