A question I get fairly often from photographers who’ve seen my GIF and MP4 work: “Can Lightroom make timelapse videos?”
Short answer: not on its own. Lightroom Classic is a photo editing tool, and it keeps its identity pretty firmly. The Slideshow module can export a video file, but what you get is a presentation slideshow — 3-5 second fades between full-resolution photos — not a timelapse that plays at 24fps with hundreds of frames flying by per second.
The longer answer is more useful. There are three real paths to timelapse video from Lightroom-edited photos, and which one you pick depends on what you shot and how far you need to take the result.
Two Things Both Called “Timelapse”
Before going further, it’s worth separating two workflows that often get lumped together.
Burst-shot sequences — you held the shutter button and fired 20-60 frames in 2-3 seconds. Your burst buffer filled, your camera sensor heated up slightly. These sequences live in Lightroom like ordinary photos, often with SubSecTime metadata recording the precise sub-second gaps between frames (80-120ms between shots at 10fps). Played back as video, they produce 2-3 second animations. Wedding photographers use these for first dances, confetti exits, ring exchanges — any fast-moving moment you want to relive in motion.
Interval sequences — you used an intervalometer or your camera’s built-in interval mode: one frame every 5 seconds, or 30 seconds, or 2 minutes, over 30 minutes or several hours. Played back at 24fps, those 200 frames become an 8-second video showing clouds racing across a sky or a building construction compressing into minutes. This is the classic timelapse most people picture.
Both result in a folder of RAWs or JPEGs that need to become a video. The editing workflow in Lightroom is the same — edit one frame, sync settings across the sequence. The export workflow is different, and the tools that help are different.
Method 1: In-Lightroom for Burst Sequences
For burst-shot sequences, there’s a way to do this entirely inside Lightroom without leaving your catalog.
Full disclosure: I built the tool I’m about to describe. Burst2GIF is a Lightroom Classic plugin that takes a selected group of photos from your library, applies your Develop settings, and renders them as an MP4 video or animated GIF directly from within Lightroom. You select the burst sequence in the film strip, click a button, and in about 10 seconds you have a video file back in your catalog with the correct capture timestamp so it sorts into the right place in your gallery.
The FPS is auto-detected from the SubSecTime metadata — if you shot at 10fps, the video plays at 10fps. Output goes up to 6K MP4. The free version handles 10 exports with a 1500px cap; the paid version is a one-time $29.
Who this is NOT for: traditional intervalometer timelapse. The FPS detection is designed for burst photography, where gaps between frames are measured in milliseconds. If you’ve shot one frame every 5 seconds, the auto-detected FPS would be nonsensical — you’d be fighting the tool rather than working with it. For interval sequences, the next two methods are better fits.
Method 2: LRTimelapse
If you’re doing actual interval timelapse work, LRTimelapse is the dedicated tool. It’s been around for years and integrates with Lightroom through the smart preview system — you edit in Lightroom Develop, hand the sequence to LRTimelapse for processing, and it renders the final video with your color grade intact.
The two things that make it worth learning:
Deflickering. Even with a fully manual exposure, slight variations between frames — imperceptible in individual photos — cause a distracting flicker in the final video. It happens because of tiny fluctuations in aperture, atmospheric haze, or sensor behavior between shots. LRTimelapse analyzes luminance across the sequence and smooths those variations. Without deflicker, even technically perfect timelapse footage often looks amateur. With it, the output looks smooth and professional.
Holy grail transitions. Shooting a sunrise or sunset timelapse, you’re dealing with light changing by several stops over 30 minutes. Keep a fixed exposure and you’ll blow out the sky by 7am. LRTimelapse handles the gradual exposure adjustments across thousands of frames in a way that Lightroom’s batch processing simply cannot — each frame gets a calculated value between keyframes, and the transitions look natural rather than stepped.
There’s a free tier for sequences up to a certain frame count, which covers a lot of typical use cases. Longer sequences or advanced features require a paid license.
When LRTimelapse makes sense: cloud sequences, star trails, sunrise/sunset, construction or event timelapse — any situation where you need deflickering, are dealing with changing light, or have sequences of hundreds to thousands of frames.
Method 3: Export Frames, Use a Video Editor
The path that needs zero additional software (beyond what you might already have):
- Edit your sequence in Lightroom — sync settings across all frames
- Export as JPEG at your target resolution
- Open DaVinci Resolve (free), Premiere Pro, or Final Cut
- Import the folder as an image sequence — every modern video editor handles this natively
- Set the playback frame rate (24fps, 25fps, or 30fps, depending on what you want)
- Export as MP4
DaVinci Resolve’s free version is particularly good for this. Import a folder of sequentially numbered images and it treats them as a single clip at whatever frame rate you specify. You can also continue grading there if you want to adjust the look after Lightroom.
The downside is the round-trip friction. You’re leaving Lightroom, switching applications, working in a different interface. For a single timelapse sequence, that’s 15-20 extra minutes. If you’re doing 10 sequences per project and none of them need deflickering, the workflow cost adds up fast.
One practical note: if you exported to JPEG at 16-bit quality and are doing color-critical work, you’ll want to export TIFF instead. JPEG at maximum quality is usually fine for timelapse playback, but for anything that’ll end up on a large screen or needs heavy grading in post, TIFF exports from Lightroom give you more latitude.
Shooting Tips That Actually Matter
Regardless of which export method you use, timelapse quality is mostly determined in the field.
For burst sequences: Use your camera’s continuous high-speed mode. Lock exposure and focus before starting the burst — any AF hunt during the sequence will produce an unusable animation. Shutter speed at 1/500s or faster to freeze motion frame-to-frame. For interval sequences: Use manual exposure — no auto ISO, no auto white balance, no image stabilization if your camera is on a tripod. The goal is consistency between frames; automatic adjustments create the frame-to-frame variation that causes flicker. Use your camera’s built-in interval mode or a dedicated intervalometer.
Frame count math: At 24fps, you need 24 frames per second of final video. A 30-second timelapse requires 720 frames. Shooting one frame every 5 seconds, that’s 3,600 seconds — an hour of shooting. Plan your interval and duration before you set up the camera.
Storage: A 5-minute landscape timelapse at 24fps with RAW files can easily run 5-10GB. Have enough cards and enough space on your editing drive.
Which Path Fits Your Work
Wedding and event photographer wanting motion in client galleries: Burst sequences + Burst2GIF. The setup is under 2 minutes, the output lands directly in your Lightroom catalog, and the results are what clients actually share from their galleries. Occasional timelapse with no interest in extra software: Export frames from Lightroom, assemble in DaVinci Resolve. It’s slower, but it works and costs nothing.
The thing all three methods have in common: you make your actual edits in Lightroom Develop. The color grade, the exposure, the white balance — those all happen where you normally work, with your normal tools. The video assembly is just the last step.
