Stop motion animation has this quality that video doesn’t quite have — each frame is a full, sharp photograph, and the movement between them feels deliberate in a way that continuous footage doesn’t. It’s been used in everything from product campaigns to music videos. It also happens to be something photographers can do right now, with gear they already own, without dedicated animation software.

Here’s what most photographers miss: your camera’s burst mode, combined with intentional movement between shots, already produces stop motion footage. No clay, no rig, no frame-by-frame animation app required. Just a clear technique and a way to get the frames out as animation.

What Stop Motion Is (vs Regular Burst)

Regular burst photography: the subject moves continuously, the camera fires at 10-20fps, and you get 20-30 frames of smooth motion. Played back as animation, it looks like a short video clip. The motion is uninterrupted.

Stop motion assumes the opposite. Between each frame, something changes intentionally — a subject moves to a new position, a prop shifts, a hand opens slightly. The camera fires once, captures the change, then the next move happens. Played back, you get that characteristic stuttery, handmade feeling where each position is held for a fraction of a second before jumping to the next.

In practice: the difference is whether the movement is continuous (subject doesn’t stop between frames) or discrete and held (subject pauses at each position while you fire). For burst GIF work, continuous is fine. For stop motion, you want discrete.

You end up with fewer frames — 8-15 is typical — but each frame shows a clear, frozen position, which is exactly the look you’re after.

How to Shoot It

The shooting technique is more controlled than regular burst work, and that’s the whole point.

Frame count: 8-15 frames typically. Fewer than 6 and the animation is too short to read clearly. More than 20 and you’re approaching video territory — which might be what you want, but it loses the stop motion aesthetic.

Subject motion: The subject needs to move deliberately between each frame, hold the position, then you fire. For a wedding example: rings moving closer together in 10 discrete steps, each step held while you take a single shot. Or confetti arranged by hand in a slightly different position for each frame. Or a veil being placed, one step at a time.

Camera position: Lock it down or hold it absolutely steady. Any camera movement between frames reads as a glitch rather than intentional subject motion. A tripod is ideal. Steady freehand works for short sequences if you brace against something solid.

Firing mode: You don’t need continuous burst for this. Single-shot mode works perfectly since you’re firing manually after each subject position change. A remote shutter release helps because you can step away from the camera between frames without touching it.

Light consistency: In studio or controlled light, this is simple. Outdoors, watch for clouds shifting between frames — if the exposure changes mid-sequence, each frame will be a different brightness and the animation will flicker. Shooting in the shade or on an overcast day removes this variable entirely.

Here’s a workflow that’s worked for me: camera on tripod, brief whoever I’m working with on what I need (“move the ring half a centimeter, hold, wait for the click”), then work through the frames one by one. For 10 frames it takes maybe 3-4 minutes total. That’s roughly the same time investment as setting up a flat lay — but the output moves.

Editing the Sequence in Lightroom

Editing a stop motion sequence in Lightroom is identical to editing any burst sequence:

  1. Select all frames in the filmstrip
  2. Edit the first frame to where you want the look
  3. Sync settings across the sequence (Develop → Sync Settings, or Cmd+Shift+S on Mac)

Every frame in the sequence needs identical develop settings. Exposure, white balance, tone curve — all matched. Any variation between frames introduces flicker in the animation, which is exactly what you don’t want for a clean stop motion look. (Intentional flicker is a different creative choice, but that’s not what we’re after here.)

For controlled-light shooting, sync and you’re done. Outdoors, you might need to manually correct one or two frames where the light shifted slightly. I use the exposure slider and HSL panel to match frames that got different light. It adds a few minutes but the animation is much cleaner for it.

One thing I’ve started doing: expose for the sequence slightly to the right of center (just short of highlight clipping), then pull down in Lightroom uniformly. This gives consistent shadow detail across all frames and makes the sync step more reliable.

Exporting the Animation from Lightroom

Lightroom Classic doesn’t export animations natively. To stay inside your catalog — keep the metadata intact, have the animation file land back in the right place with the correct capture date, sorted between the other photos from that session — you need a plugin.

Full disclosure: I built Burst2GIF specifically for this. Situations That Work Well

Wedding details: Rings moving into position frame by frame, bouquet resting against a dress, a champagne pour staged in four or five steps. Detail sequences have stable backgrounds and controlled movement — close to ideal stop motion conditions.

Getting-ready moments: Getting ready has a built-in narrative: veil going on, jewelry being fastened, dress being buttoned. Each step of the process is one frame. The sequence tells a story without any of the chaos of continuous burst work.

Confetti or flower petal arrangements: Scatter petals slightly further in each frame, or arrange confetti mid-fall position by position. The randomness of each arrangement adds something you couldn’t get from a single flat lay.

Product photography: If you do any commercial work alongside weddings, stop motion is very much expected territory. A product rotating 15 degrees between frames looks polished and is completely different from a burst shot of continuous rotation.

What doesn’t work well: anything with complex continuous motion — running, dancing mid-song, flying confetti you didn’t place. These sequences need the camera firing the entire time motion happens. Stop motion gives you staccato jumps between held positions, not smooth flow through continuous action. For those moments, regular burst GIF workflow is the right approach. The One Constraint Worth Knowing

At 8fps, a 10-frame stop motion sequence is about 1.2 seconds long. Shorter than most burst GIFs, which might run 2-3 seconds. If you want longer animations, you need more frames, which means more time shooting and briefing subjects. For most situations, 10-15 frames is the sweet spot — enough to read as intentional motion, short enough to loop cleanly without feeling repetitive.

The constraint is actually part of what makes it work. Stop motion looks deliberate because it is deliberate. Every frame was placed exactly where it is by someone making a decision. That’s a different thing from a video clip, and clients who haven’t seen it done with their own moments tend to react to it with a different kind of attention.

Whether it belongs in every session is your call. For me, it’s occasional — maybe two or three sequences per wedding where the moment, the subject, and the setup feel right for it. The rest of the time, continuous burst GIF work serves the gallery better. Both tools, used when they fit.
